How long is a coaching program?

The duration of a coaching program can vary depending on individual needs and goals. However, a common structure often involves coaching sessions scheduled every two weeks. This frequency allows for meaningful progress while also providing time for reflection and integration between sessions.

In terms of the minimum duration, I typically recommend a minimum commitment of three months. This timeframe aligns with the principles of sustainable change and allows sufficient time to delve into challenges, explore solutions, and cultivate new habits.

Coaching takes time, because old habits die hard, and progress is usually not linear, but a dynamic process. Therefore, consistent effort over a sustained period is necessary to achieve lasting transformation and growth.

Of course, if at any point you feel that increasing the frequency to once a week would better serve your goals, we can certainly accommodate that. Ultimately, the goal is to create a coaching program that supports you in achieving your objectives in a way that feels manageable and sustainable.

If you have any further questions or would like to discuss the specifics of your coaching program, please feel free to reach out.

What is the process like?

The coaching process begins with a comprehensive “discovery session,” which serves as the foundation for our coaching relationship. In this session, we’ll take the time to get to know each other, establish rapport, and design our coaching alliance. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:

  1. Discovery Session:
    • Introduction: We’ll start with introductions and set the tone for our coaching relationship. This is an opportunity for us to establish trust and build rapport.
    • Background Exploration: We’ll delve into your background, experiences, values, and aspirations. Understanding your unique perspective and context will help shape our coaching journey.
    • Coaching Objectives: Together, we’ll clarify your coaching objectives and desired outcomes. This will guide our focus and direction throughout the coaching process.
    • Practicalities of Coaching: We’ll discuss logistics such as scheduling, session frequency, communication preferences, and any other practical considerations to ensure a smooth coaching experience.
    • Relationship Design: We’ll co-create agreements regarding confidentiality, expectations, boundaries, and how we’ll navigate challenges or conflicts that may arise during our coaching journey.
  2. Regular Coaching Sessions:
    • Session Structure: Each coaching session typically lasts 45 minutes, with a focus on your agenda and objectives. You’ll lead the conversation, and I’ll provide a supportive and empowering space for exploration and growth.
    • Client-Centered Approach: Expect to be the primary contributor during sessions, as this is your process. You’ll have the opportunity to delve into topics that are most relevant and meaningful to you, driving the agenda based on your needs and priorities.
    • Active Listening and Powerful Questioning: I’ll engage in active listening and ask thought-provoking questions to deepen your self-awareness, uncover insights, and stimulate forward movement towards your goals.
    • Goal Progress and Adjustment: We’ll regularly review your progress towards your coaching objectives and make adjustments as needed. Flexibility is key, and we’ll adapt our approach to ensure it remains aligned with your evolving needs and aspirations.

I do use specific coaching techniques and principles. Feel free to ask me about them during the coaching if you are interested. I am all about transparency!

How do I get started?

Getting started with coaching is a simple and straightforward process. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Self-Reflection: Take some time to reflect on what you hope to achieve through coaching. Consider your goals, aspirations, challenges, and areas where you’d like support and guidance.

  2. Research and Find a Coach: Look for coaches who specialize in the areas you want to work on or who have the approach and style that resonates with you. You can find coaches through online directories, referrals from friends or colleagues, or professional coaching organizations.

  3. Reach Out: Once you’ve identified potential coaches, reach out to them to inquire about their services and availability. Many coaches offer free initial consultations (like myself) where you can discuss your goals, ask questions, and see if there’s a good fit.

  4. Schedule an Initial Session: If you feel comfortable after the initial conversation, schedule an initial coaching session or discovery session with the coach. This session is an opportunity to get to know each other better, clarify your coaching objectives, and determine if you’d like to proceed with coaching.

  5. Commit to the Process: If you decide to move forward, commit to the coaching process and schedule regular sessions with your coach. Be open to exploring new perspectives, challenging yourself, and taking action towards your goals.

  6. Take Action: Between coaching sessions, be proactive in implementing the insights, strategies, and action plans discussed with your coach. Use the time between sessions to reflect, take steps towards your goals, and integrate new habits and behaviors into your life.

  7. Stay Engaged: Stay engaged and actively participate in the coaching process. Be honest and open with your coach about your progress, challenges, and any adjustments needed along the way.

  8. Evaluate and Adjust: Periodically evaluate your progress and the effectiveness of the coaching process. If necessary, communicate with your coach about any changes or adjustments you’d like to make to better support your growth and development.

Coaching is a collaborative partnership focused on helping you achieve your goals and unlock your full potential. By taking the initiative to get started with coaching and committing to the process, you can embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery and growth.

Is coaching confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is a fundamental principle of the coaching relationship, and coaches are ethically and professionally bound to maintain the confidentiality of their clients.

Here’s what confidentiality in coaching typically entails:

  1. Privacy: Coaching sessions are conducted in a private and secure environment where conversations are not overheard or recorded without the client’s consent.

  2. Non-Disclosure: Coaches do not disclose any information shared by their clients during coaching sessions to third parties without the client’s explicit permission, except in cases where there is a legal or ethical obligation to do so (e.g., if the client discloses intent to harm themselves or others).

  3. Professional Ethics: Coaches adhere to professional codes of ethics that prioritize client confidentiality and privacy. They are committed to maintaining the trust and integrity of the coaching relationship.

It’s important for clients to feel safe and comfortable sharing openly and honestly during coaching sessions, knowing that their privacy and confidentiality are respected and protected. If you have any concerns about confidentiality or privacy in coaching, feel free to discuss them with me  at the outset of our coaching relationship.

How is coaching different from therapy?

Coaching and therapy are both forms of support aimed at helping individuals navigate life’s challenges and achieve personal growth, but they differ in focus and approach:

Coaching: While coaching’s primary concern is mental health and well-being, it tends to focus more on the present and future than therapy. Coaching assumes that individuals are whole and capable, and it aims to enhance personal growth, clarify goals, and develop strategies for achieving them. It operates under the belief that nothing is inherently broken and that individuals have the resources within themselves to create positive change.

Therapy: Therapy is also concerned with mental health and well-being but often focuses on addressing past traumas, unresolved emotions, and psychological issues. Therapy may involve diagnosing and treating mental health disorders and utilizing evidence-based techniques to address specific concerns.

Can I combine coaching and therapy?

Yes, it’s possible to combine therapy and coaching, and this approach is often referred to as “integrated therapy-coaching.” This hybrid approach can offer a comprehensive and holistic approach to personal development and well-being, addressing both emotional healing and goal achievement.

Here are a few ways in which therapy and coaching can be combined:

  1. Sequential Approach: Clients may engage in therapy to address underlying emotional issues or mental health concerns before transitioning to coaching to focus on goal setting, personal growth, and skill-building.

  2. Concurrent Approach: Some clients may choose to engage in both therapy and coaching simultaneously, with therapy addressing emotional healing and coaching addressing goal achievement and personal development.

  3. Collaborative Approach: Therapists and coaches can collaborate to provide coordinated support, with each professional focusing on their respective areas of expertise while sharing insights and strategies to support the client’s overall well-being.

When you combine the two, it’s advisable to let both your coach and therapist know you do this.

Is coaching for me?

Deciding if coaching is right for you involves a bit of self-reflection and consideration of your goals, needs, and preferences. Here are some questions to help you determine if coaching might be a good fit:

  1. Are you seeking change or improvement in your life? Coaching is ideal for individuals who want to make positive changes, set and achieve goals, overcome obstacles, or enhance specific areas of their lives.

  2. Do you feel stuck or unsure about how to progress? If you’re feeling stuck in a rut or lacking clarity on your next steps, coaching can provide guidance, support, and fresh perspectives to help you move forward.

  3. Are you open to self-discovery and personal growth? Coaching involves introspection, exploration, and a willingness to challenge yourself. If you’re open to self-discovery and committed to personal growth, coaching can be a powerful tool for transformation.

  4. Do you value accountability and support? Coaching provides a supportive and empowering environment where you can set goals, take action, and stay accountable for your progress. If you value accountability and appreciate having someone in your corner cheering you on, coaching may be beneficial for you.

  5. Are you willing to invest time and effort in yourself? Coaching requires a commitment to the process and a willingness to invest time and effort in your own growth and development. If you’re ready to prioritize yourself and take proactive steps towards your goals, coaching could be a valuable investment.

  6. Are you ready to take ownership of your life and choices? Coaching empowers you to take ownership of your life, make conscious choices, and create the future you desire. If you’re ready to take control of your destiny and live authentically, coaching can support you in this journey.

Ultimately, the decision to pursue coaching is a personal one, and it’s important to trust your intuition and listen to your inner wisdom. It’s important to always be mindful of and transparent about your emotions. This will help the coaching greatly! Also, ensure you feel empowered to make your own decisions, and during the coaching you should feel we’re a good match in terms of values and goals.

Rest assured, creating a safe and supportive space for the coaching sessions is always my top priority. I always have your well-being in mind.

What do you mean by 'authentic self'?

The authentic self is what remains when you strip away all the stories, beliefs, and identifications that we accumulate over time. It’s the pure essence of who you are at your core, untouched by external influences or societal expectations.

When you drop all the narratives in your head and let go of the labels and identifications that define you, what emerges is your authentic self—the truest expression of your being. It’s like peeling away the layers of an onion until you reach the innermost core, where your essence resides in its most unadulterated form.

Embracing and connecting with your authentic self allows you to live in alignment with your deepest truths and values.

What is a saboteur?

A “saboteur” is that inner critic or negative voice within you that undermines your confidence, sabotages your efforts, and holds you back from reaching your full potential.

These saboteurs show up as self-doubt, fear, perfectionism, procrastination, and other negative patterns of thinking and behavior that limit your success and happiness.

Identifying and managing these saboteurs is key to cultivating a more positive and empowering mindset, enabling you to overcome obstacles, thrive in challenging situations, and achieve greater levels of fulfillment and success in your life.

In my coaching I use this concept a lot and you will become very familiar with your particular saboteurs, grow awareness of them and learn ways to silence them.
